AN “UNENLIGHTENED” VIEW OF THE CREATION/EVOLUTION FLAP
By: James J. Jackson
The origin of the earth has always been a mystery. Many who consider themselves enlightened believe that Creationism is improbable, even impossible, while accepting evolution and other theories as fact, with no tangible proof or rationale to substantiate the theory.
The thought of a Creator, somewhere out in the heavens, judging people and holding them to His standards is daunting. Our rebellious human nature feels more comfortable believing that humans are no different than animals or bacteria, and therefore, no more accountable or liable for their thoughts and actions.
If we are here by accident, and return to nothing when we die, then we can live as we please. And, one day man thinks he will even solve that death thing.
Evolution is taught as fact, even though it fails on many fronts. Still, science continues to research other possible answers to our origin. The scientific community will accept almost any theory other than the presence of an all-knowing Creator.
Polls show that 58% of us believe in divine creation/intelligent design; that some unnamed intelligent entity created us. Others (17%) believe that life was created when the earth was struck by a comet. An equal number believe all life crawled out of an ancient lake, and the remaining respondents believe aliens from outer space brought life to earth.
There is also “The Big Bang” theory, in which everything was created at once by a loud bang! One Christian writer wrote that this may be the closest theory to reality, opining that God spoke, and Bang!, all creation came into existence.
The obvious, almost elementary response to anti-Creation theories is, “Who created the ancient lake, or the aliens, and who set the comet into motion?” Each theory raises more questions than answers.
There are scientific explanations for the changing seasons; the earth, moon and sun moving in their paths; bird and animal migrations, etc., but those explanation prove, rather than disprove creation. If all things were the result of a mistake, chaos, or random incidents, why doesn’t the sun rise from a different direction each morning, and why do the seasons rotate in order, and why does the moon go through the same phases each time; why not eight phases one month, then 12 phases the next month, etc?
The Bible tells us that God created everything, but that He created mankind in His own image, with special attributes, such as the ability to reason, to solve problems and to build relationships and communicate verbally.
Most of all, He gave us the ability to discern between right and wrong. Animals operate from instinct, which is a code placed in their genetics, which makes all animals within one animal family operate exactly the same. They cannot use reason to operate outside of their genetic limits. Although they can be taught tricks, and the semblance of mathematical reasoning, it is only possible through repetition and a simple carrot stick reward/punishment process.
It may be that God, in creating the Universe, deliberately left many questions unanswered. Perhaps He endowed us with inquisitive minds, to hold our interest and spark a quest to know Him more deeply. For centuries, people worshipped the moon, believing that the man in the moon watched over us.
Mankind figured out that the moon had a distinct effect upon ocean tides and other atmospheric conditions, but we are not able to determine exactly how it does. Many thought that the moon was made of green cheese. When we landed on the moon, we found absolutely nothing to explain the moon’s effect on the earth, and, of course, no cheese. Perhaps the God left such things unanswered in order to increase our faith in Him.
I would rather depend upon fact than theory. Our origin is clearly stated in the Bible: “In the Beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” By faith, we can believe and trust in that statement. Without faith, we will only continue to wander in the wilderness of enlightened ignorance.
