Our family discovered a helpful electronic device earlier this year while traveling in Lansing, Michigan.  Never having been there, we found our way around the city with a GPS device.

We would type our destination into the handheld device about the size of digital camera that communicates via the Global Positioning System.  Using GPS, an electronic voice would tell us exactly where to turn and exactly how many tenths of a mile before the turn.

We could even choose what kind of voice would speak to us.  First, we chose an American male, awhile later we changed to a British female, and lastly, we listened to an Australian male.

There was no way we could get lost using our GPS device.  If we missed a street where we were supposed to turn, the voice would say “recalculating” and give us new instructions that headed us in the right direction.

To say that modern technology has changed our lives would be an understatement.  Often these new devices are developed first for space exploration or the military.  The Global Positioning System (GPS), according to a government website, is a “U.S. space-based radio-navigation system.”

It provides “accurate location and time information for an unlimited number of people in all weather, day and night, anywhere in the world.”  GPS is made up of three parts – 24 satellites orbiting the Earth, control and monitoring stations on Earth, and the GPS receivers owned by users.

So, our family received directions via satellites above the Earth that detected our exact location and communicated to us in our car so we wouldn’t get lost.  Quite amazing, isn’t it!

I recently saw a church sign that read, “Lost?  Try GPS - God’s Plan of Salvation.”  The sign reminded me of the scripture that says Jesus came from heaven to earth to seek and to save the lost.

Are you lost and in need of a spiritual GPS?  There is a way which seems right to each of us, but the end of it leads to eternal death (Proverbs 14:12).  God loved the world so much that He sent His only Son to die, so we can have salvation and eternal life.

Once you have discovered God’s plan of salvation, He will guide you through life.  Isaiah 30:21 says you will hear a voice saying, “This is the way, walk in it.”  Pastor and author A.W. Tozer said, “The voice of God is a friendly voice.  No one need fear to listen to it unless he has already made up his mind to resist it.”

Each new day takes us somewhere we’ve never been before.  Should we make a wrong turn, God can help us find our way.  Hymn writer Frederick Faber once said, “We do not always hear because of the noise, hurry and distraction which life causes as it rushes on.”  Listen for God to speak through His Word and His Spirit.  He promises to direct our path if we trust in Him.
