DON'T WASTE TIME WORRYING ABOUT DOOMSDAY
By: James J. Jackson
Mankind has forever been fascinated with the notion of doomsday. Hundreds of end times scenarios have been played out in books and movies over the years. One common thread that runs through the doomsday stories is that mankind somehow manages to destroy the earth by war, disease, neglect, etc.
One writer, Bruce Clayton, penned what he calls, ‘Life after Doomsday‘, designed, he says as, “..a comprehensive survival manual to give a family or small group of people the necessary information to live with minimal discomfort after the end of the world..." . Another writer wrote the book, ‘Have a Nice Doomsday: Why Millions of Americans Are Looking Forward to the End of the World’. I would certainly like to read the survey that revealed that conclusion!
Some stories tell of earth’s destruction, leaving only a small band of survivors who wander aimlessly or travel through space, seeking a replacement planet to inhabit. The Planet of the Apes series, by British writer Bruce Clayton, tells of mankind’s destruction by nuclear war, leaving only a few survivors who have ‘devolved’ into wild, mute animals, while apes evolved into intelligent, speaking beings who hunt, enslave and often kill humans. A space traveler, (Charlton Heston) happens upon the planet, and soon realizes that he has traveled into the future and is witnessing post doomsday earth.
In a recent doomsday saga, ‘I am Legend’, a survivor of the destruction of the earth, is desperately attempting to contact another human being, any human being who may have also survived. Almost daily, we are warned of pending doom, in the form of meteors or other space objects that are calculated to impact the earth, or pass by so close that we could be thrown off our axis.
We are warned of various killer flu conditions that will wipe out millions. Although it doesn’t come to pass, the same warnings spring forth at the next flu season. After Hurricane Katrina, we were told that, due to climate change (caused by human activity), we would experience a huge increase in deadly storms and hurricanes like we’ve never seen before. The two years since have brought fewer, weaker hurricanes than we have seen in many years.
We are told that fluctuation in air temperatures proves that humans are destroying our delicate earth, but no one is allowed to challenge the scientific ‘consensus’, which is presented as fact. We are told that carbon dioxide, a by-product of respiration (also created by the sun, trees, and many other sources), is now a danger to the earth, and that, by merely living our lives, each of us creates a ‘carbon footprint’, which must be reduced to lower our impact on the earth. If you cannot or will not reduce your footprint, you can pay money to someone else with a smaller footprint, and then use their unused carbon credits. Seemingly intelligent people who refuse to believe in our Creator actually believe this.
Christians believe that God created mankind and the earth, the universe, and every thing that exists for one purpose; to serve Him. Mankind, in our sinful, evil human nature, would rather believe that the Universe was made by mistake. We, therefore, are accountable to no one. We live, we die, then return to nothingness. How sad that would be were it true! The Bible tells us, in the Psalms 10:3, “He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord. 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.” And in chapter 14, “The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.”.
We who trust in the Triune God, have the peace that comes from knowing that it is not all up to us, so doomsday holds no dread for a Christian. Many books and films have been written, but, thanks be to God, He has already written the final chapter, which tells us that Christ will come again in glory to take His own to Heaven, where we will live forever with no doomsday in sight! And it’s free!
