A huge uproar has erupted over the fact that Miss California Carrie Prejean, a committed Christian, lost the Miss USA title when she took a stand for traditional marriage.

Not only did the homosexual activist and “gay” blogger Perez Hilton, a pageant judge, give Prejean a zero score for upholding biblical truth, relegating her to the runner-up position and costing her the Miss USA crown for purely political motives.  He also added insult to injury by labeling her a “dumb b----.”

A real classy guy.

Still, considering the direction our culture is headed, petty insults and lost career or personal goals should not be the chief concerns for Christians and other defenders of traditional values.  Not when a federal thought crimes bill [H.R. 1913, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009] is on the move in Congress which would essentially criminalize dissent when it comes to same-sex marriage and the rest of the radical “gay” agenda.

So, if you think homosexuality is wrong based upon, say, the Word of the living God, and you were to say so publicly, you could be prosecuted under this law for “inducing violence” against homosexuals — even if inciting violence were never your intent and you made that unmistakably clear, and even if no violent act ever took place.

Matt Barber, director of cultural affairs with Liberty Counsel and associate dean with Liberty University School of Law, explains that “actual violence or injury need not take place for a ‘hate crime’ to occur.”

He writes:  “For example, if a group of Christians are at a ‘gay pride’ parade and a one of them gently places his hand on a homosexual’s shoulder and shares that there is freedom from homosexuality through a relationship with Jesus Christ, then, voila, we have a battery and, consequently, a felony ‘hate crime.’  But the Christian needn’t even touch the homosexual.  If the homosexual merely claims he was subjectively placed in ‘apprehension of bodily injury’ by the Christian’s words then, again, the Christian can be thrown in jail for a felony ‘hate crime’....”

Thus, H.R. 1913, if it becomes law, would give new (and chilling) meaning to the phrase “it’s the thought that counts.”

Then there’s the recent report from Janet Napolitano’s Department of Homeland Security warning about the dangers of right-wing extremists.  Among the “extremists” identified in this report — along with such miscreants as peaceful pro-life advocates and our military heroes — are those who engage in “exploitation of social issues such as...same-sex marriage.”

Is Napolitano talking about the majorities (and in several cases super-majorities) in no less than 30 states, including ultra-liberal California, who voted to define marriage as strictly being between a man and a woman — as it has been traditionally (i.e., throughout all of human history) understood and affirmed?  Must be, because she sure isn’t referring to deviants like Perez Hilton who will denigrate a God-fearing woman for daring to speak her mind.

No, it’s the Bible-believing Christians they are determined to not only demonize as enemies of social progress, but to brand as enemies of the state.  That’s the express purpose of the warning about pro-lifers and traditional marriage proponents in the DHS report — and, of course, the whole reason for the hate crimes bill.

For many in the media, this is cause to rejoice.  New York Times columnist Frank Rich recently identified the majority and super-majority of voters in those 30 states, and all other defenders of traditional marriage, as bigots.  In so doing he slandered “at least 60% and probably more of the country,” as talk radio’s Hugh Hewitt rightly estimates.  Like so many in society today — from beauty pageant judges to government officials — our media elites want full-fledged acceptance of all things “gay.”

To be sure, our post-Christian culture may ultimately accept the entire “gay” agenda, and even codify it into law, but defying God’s law has consequences.  And the consequences for individuals who embrace homosexuality and the societies that legitimize this practice are clearly delineated in His Word, which tells us that “they which commit such things are worthy of death, [yet they] not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them” (Romans 1:32), and as such they receive the punishment (death) which they deserve (verse 27).

No civilization has ever defied the warning of Romans 1 and survived.  So what makes us think we will be the first?
