There’s a hilarious scene in the comedy Ghostbusters in which Bill Murray is attacked by a not-so-friendly ghost and his fellow practitioners of paranormal science, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, rush to his aid.  When they reach him, they find Murray laid out on the floor covered in gook.

“He slimed me,” Murray tells them in his famous deadpan delivery.

The ghost obviously felt very threatened by Murray and went on the attack.  In much the same way, Democrats and their allies in the liberal media see Sarah Palin as an extreme threat to their demented ideology and hold on power, so they’ve done everything possible over the past few years to slime her.  She has been subject to incessant assaults since she wowed a national audience with her stunning performance at the Republican National Convention in 2008, as have all of her family members — including her Down Syndrome infant son and young daughters.

Here’s how it works, straight from the Saul Alinsky playbook.  Liberals create a caricature of a conservative figure, whomever they see as the champion of the cause at any given time (Reagan, George W. Bush, etc.).  Invariably, they portray this conservative as either stupid or racist or both, then they spend their every waking hour twisting his/her every word or action to try to cement that image in the public mind, thereby marginalizing him/her and eliminating the threat.

With Sarah, liberals trotted out their usual “she’s an idiot” line.  Tina Fey of Saturday Night Live brought the caricature to life with a Palin impersonation that was dead-on but decidedly political (Fey’s a liberal loon and SNL’s a leftist hothouse).  Since then, liberals have looked for every opportunity to solidify this image to ensure it remains embedded in the cultural consciousness.

Through it all, Sarah has remained resolute in her fight for truth, a committed Christian adhering to the biblical mandate “having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:13) — and stand strong she does, in the face of all the furious attacks.

The latest episode involved Sarah’s off-the-cuff remarks about Paul Revere in which she said he “warned the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms...[with] those warning shots and bells” signifying we were going to fight for our freedom and win.

The liberal media spent the following days sliming Sarah for mistakenly (or so they thought) claiming Revere warned the British.  Their standard line of attack was essentially this:  “Everyone knows Paul Revere warned the colonists about the British — except Sarah Palin, who is so stupid she got the story backwards!”

But she didn’t.  As historians have subsequently noted, Revere was captured by the redcoats later that same night and did in fact warn them that he had alerted the colonists, who were armed and ready to fight for their freedom.

“Palin knew this,” the Los Angeles Times blogger Andrew Malcolm related.  “The on-scene reporters did not and ran off like Revere to alert the world to Palin’s latest mis-speak, which wasn’t.”

Humiliated by this revelation, liberals jumped to the fact that Revere didn’t fire warning shots or ring bells during his famous ride.  But, again, these were off-the-cuff remarks Sarah made to a reporter.  Moreover, her liberal detractors seemed as blissfully unaware of the gunfire and bell-ringing which took place that night as they were of Revere’s capture by the British.

In his book Paul Revere’s Ride, the great historian David Hackett Fischer recounts:  “A townsman remembered that ‘repeated gunshots, the beating of drums and ringing of bells filled the air’....Along the North Shore of Massachusetts, church bells began to toll and the heavy beat of drums could be heard for many miles in the night air.”

So it turns out Sarah had virtually all of the important facts of that night down cold, while her liberal detractors apparently knew only the bare, basic storyline and nothing more.

“How secretly embarrassing this must be,” Malcolm observed, “to be forced to face that you’re dumber than the reputed dummy.”

Thankfully, millions of Americans have already figured out who the real dummies are in this ongoing battle between Sarah and the media.  Hopefully, many more will in time.
