A POST ELECTION REFLECTION
By: William Cripe Sr.
In virtually every aspect of life there are winners and there are losers. We may try to use nicer sounding words called euphemisms to describe the one who lost but at the end of the day, for the runner-up, the also-ran, the one who takes 2nd, the result is the same. What remains to be seen is who really lost and who won on Election Day.
I am neither discouraged nor heartened by the election's results. Four times in the biblical book called "Daniel" we read these words. "'…the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and bestows it on whomever He wishes.'" (Daniel 4:32) In other words, God is in control!
Several years ago "conservatives" saw their iconic candidate move from Hollywood to the oval office. The country was comfortable materially and secure militarily. As a nation we took a cruise on a luxury liner with nicely padded chairs while hors d' oeuvres were served as we reveled in the dulcet harmonies of the music of the day. It all seemed grand yet it all only served to dull our national conscience making us oblivious to the fact that the ship we were on might as well have been named the H.M.S. Titanic II.
After all is said and done, if you look at the things that really matter--with respect to the values which mark out a nation for true greatness,--the ship has docked and there has been no national awakening or rebirth. Why? Because the heart beat of the culture did not derive its vitality from the heart and mind of God but from a faulty belief that prosperity is necessarily a mark of blessing. Our national fabric remained unchanged.
A few years later, "liberals" had their day singing, "Happy Days Are Here Again," yet the nightly news of that epoch sounded more like a commercial for a sleazy soap opera. Again, the pulse of society remained thready.
In retrospect, we have been lead by "born again" presidents, Catholic presidents, Quaker presidents, and honest to goodness Christian presidents yet there has been no foundational change in our national character for the good, and one might argue for the opposite.
Will we ever accept that Washington will not/cannot/should not fulfill the Christian's "Great Commission?" Charles Colson wrote in Kingdoms In Conflict that "…human politics is based on the premise that society must be changed in order to change people, in the politics of the Kingdom [of Heaven] it is people who must be changed in order to change society."
As a result of this election, many in our nation are thrilled because they have received what they think they wanted and believe a new day is about to dawn. Oh, how I hope they are right. But sometimes the worst thing that can happen to a nation is for God Almighty to give the people what they want.
So we plug away, one day at a time trying to impact the little spheres of influence over which God has placed each one of those who understand.
At the least, I suspect we will all become better pray-ers in the days ahead.
