IS THE EARTH BURSTING AT THE SEAMS, OR IS THERE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE?

The United Nations warns us that the world's population is about to surpass 7 Billion people. Many fear this is the result of 'population explosion', described as a condition where an organism's numbers exceed the carrying capacity of its habitat..”. Experts opine that, “Humans are 10,000 more common than they should be according to the rules of the animal kingdom, and we have agriculture to thank for that.”

We have heard dire warnings of ca strophic famine and death caused by over population for at least two centuries. When earth's population doubled from about two million to four million from the 1920's to the 1950's, soothsayers warned that catastrophic famines were on their way. In the book, 'The Population Bomb', Paul and Anne Erlich declared, “The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. At this late date nothing can prevent a substantial increase in the world death rate.” Instead, we somehow continue to produce sufficient crops and livestock to feed the growing numbers of people.

Some point to the famine and drought in parts of the world as the proof of decades-old overcrowding alarms. Actually, most of the starvation and famine that exists today (largely in sub-Saharan Africa), are due to man's inhumanity to man, to advance a particular religious belief, or for power's sake. In places like Haiti, political power struggles have dismantled the social underpinnings that allowed that country's tourism, exports and other economic engines to flourish in a viable society.

As a result, there are no jobs and no social networks to help people. Anarchy results, along with starvation and poverty. In many countries, those in power drive people from their farms into central cities where they can be more easily controlled. The land, untilled and un-irrigated, reverts to uninhabitable desert, creating a multitude of refugees, who, in turn, place stress on neighboring countries.

Why don't prosperous nations offer help? We do, but most of the goods and supplies are confiscated, stolen or misused by those in charge, and seldom reach those who need it. Add that problem to the fact that we listen to those who offer another 'The sky is falling!' scenario every day who have convinced us that burning corn as vehicle fuel will 'save the earth' while humans go hungry.

Most people seldom (or never) travel outside their own country, and many never travel beyond their city, state or region. This leaves them vulnerable to distortions such as, “The earth is running out of trees”, or that the increasing population has us standing nearly shoulder to shoulder on the earth. The truth is, that humans inhabit less than 2% of the earth. Water occupies approximately 29% (According to researcher Matt Rosenberg: http:/geography.about.com/od/populationgeography/a/popdensity.htm).

Modern science would have us believe that God was somehow in error when He instructed us in Genesis 9:7, “As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it." We should trust God and love others as ourselves, and there will be plenty of room for more.
